How to Insert Special Characters Using Smart Text in Your Embroidery Software

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Smart Text is a powerful feature in eXPerience 8 embroidery software that simplifies the process of inserting special characters and predefined symbols while creating or editing text objects. It automatically replaces specific character sequences (abbreviations) with their corresponding symbols, saving you time and effort.

What is Smart Text?

Smart Text acts as an auto-replace tool specifically designed for text in your embroidery designs. When enabled, it monitors your typing and, upon recognizing a predefined sequence, replaces it with a designated special character or symbol.

Benefits:

  • Ease of Use: Quickly insert symbols like copyright (©), registered (®), or even decorative icons without needing to search through character maps.
  • Efficiency: Speed up your text creation workflow, especially when frequently using specific symbols.
  • Customization: Create your own abbreviations for frequently used characters or even small logos/motifs.

How to Use Predefined Smart Text Abbreviations

eXPerience 8 comes with a list of built-in abbreviations.

  1. Select the Text Tool: From your toolbar, choose the ‘Text’ tool.
  2. Start Typing: Click on your design area to set the starting point for your text and begin typing.
  3. Ensure Smart Text is Enabled: Check your Text tool options or properties bar to confirm that ‘Smart Text’ is active. (See section below on how to enable/disable).
  4. Type the Abbreviation: Enter one of the predefined character sequences. For example, to insert a happy face (☺), you might type :) (refer to the eXPerience 8 predefined list for exact sequences).
  5. Observe: As soon as you complete the sequence, eXPerience 8 will automatically replace it with the corresponding symbol.

Example: If you type (c), it might automatically change to ©.

Enabling and Disabling Smart Text

There might be times when you want to type the character sequence itself without it being replaced. In such cases, you need to disable Smart Text.

  1. Locate the Smart Text Option: While the Text tool is active, look for a ‘Smart Text’ checkbox or toggle button, typically found in the tool’s property bar or options panel.
  2. Toggle the Setting:
    • To Enable: Ensure the ‘Smart Text’ option is checked or turned on.
    • To Disable: Uncheck or turn off the ‘Smart Text’ option.

If you type an abbreviation sequence (like :)) while Smart Text is disabled, it will remain as those characters and will not be replaced by the symbol (☺).

How to Create Your Own Smart Text Abbreviations

You can expand the functionality by adding your own custom abbreviations.

  1. Access the Smart Text/Abbreviation Settings: Find the ‘Smart Text’ or ‘Abbreviations’ management section within your eXPerience 8 settings or Text tool options.
  2. Add New Abbreviation: Look for an ‘Add’ or ‘New’ button.
  3. Define the Abbreviation:
    • In the first field (often labelled ‘Sequence’ or ‘Abbreviation’), type the character sequence you want to use (e.g., *mylogo*).
    • In the second field (often labelled ‘Replacement’ or ‘Symbol’), insert or select the special character, symbol, or even a small pre-designed element you want this sequence to represent.
  4. Save/Confirm: Click ‘OK’ or ‘Save’ to add your new custom abbreviation to the list.

Using Your Custom Abbreviations

Using your newly created abbreviations works just like using the predefined ones.

  1. Select the Text Tool.
  2. Ensure Smart Text is Enabled. (If it was disabled, re-enable it).
  3. Click to Start Typing.
  4. Type Your Custom Sequence: Enter the exact character sequence you defined (e.g., *mylogo*).
  5. Watch it Transform: The sequence will be automatically replaced with the symbol you assigned.

By mastering Smart Text, you can significantly enhance your efficiency and creativity when working with text in eXPerience 8 embroidery software.
