Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Measure tool is an essential utility for ensuring the accuracy and proper placement of elements within your embroidery designs. It allows you to calculate the precise distance between any two points on the design area. This guide will walk you through how to use the tool and provide useful tips for gauging the size of your objects.

Step 1: Activating the Measure Tool

There are two primary ways to activate the Measure tool:

  • Via the Toolbar: Click on the Ruler icon located on the left-hand toolbar.
  • Via Hotkey: Press the F9 key on your keyboard for instant access.

Once activated, your mouse cursor will change into a crosshair icon, indicating that the Measure tool is ready to use.

Step 2: Taking a Measurement

  1. Move the crosshair cursor to your desired starting point.
  2. Click and hold the left mouse button.
  3. Drag the cursor to the endpoint of the distance you wish to measure. The tool will display a line and the exact distance from the starting point to the current position of your cursor.
  4. Release the left mouse button to complete the measurement.

Useful Tip: The Measure tool remains active after you release the mouse button, allowing you to take multiple measurements without needing to reactivate it. The cursor will stay as a crosshair.

Step 3: Deactivating the Measure Tool

When you are finished measuring, you can deactivate the tool in one of several ways:

  • Right-Click: A single right-click anywhere in the design area will release the tool and return your cursor to the standard pointer.
  • Select Another Tool: Simply click on any other tool in the toolbar (such as the Selection tool), and the Measure tool will automatically be deactivated.
  • Use the Flyout: When the Measure tool is active, a convenient flyout for the Rectangle Selection tool often appears. Clicking this will also deactivate the ruler.

Additional Tips for Sizing and Measurement

Beyond the Measure tool, eXPerience 8 offers other ways to get a sense of size and dimensions.

  • Set Your Measurement Units: The software can display measurements in the metric system (millimeters, centimeters) or in inches. Ensure your preferred system is selected in the software’s general settings or preferences to get the readings you need.
  • Enable the Grid: For a constant visual reference of scale, you can enable the grid. If it is not visible, you can turn it on by navigating to the View menu and selecting the option to show the grid.
  • Check Selection Dimensions: For a quick and easy way to find the exact dimensions of an object, simply select it. The total Width and Height of the entire selection will be displayed in the Tools Options bar, eliminating the need to measure it manually.
