1. Basic Selection Tools (Toolbar)

The primary selection tools are located in the toolbar on the left side of the application window.

  1. Locate and click the Selections icon in the toolbar.
  2. A fly-out menu will appear, showing the two main selection tools:
    • Rectangle Selection
    • Lasso Selection

A. Rectangle Selection Tool

This is the standard tool for making precise, box-shaped selections.

  • Select a Single Object: Activate the Rectangle Selection tool. Your cursor is now in selection mode. Simply click on any object to select it. A highlighted rectangle with control handles will appear around the selected object.
  • Select Multiple Objects by Dragging: Click on an empty area of the design canvas and drag the cursor. A box will form. Release the mouse button, and all objects that are completely inside the box will be selected.
  • Select Partially Covered Objects (Crossing Selection): Sometimes you can’t draw a box completely around the objects you need.
    1. Hold down the Alt key.
    2. Click and drag to draw a selection rectangle that even slightly overlaps with the objects you wish to select.
    3. Release the mouse button. Any object the rectangle touched will be selected.

B. Lasso Selection Tool

The Lasso tool is perfect for selecting objects in tight or irregularly shaped areas where the Rectangle tool isn’t practical.

  1. Select the Lasso Selection tool from the toolbar.
  2. Click and hold the mouse button, then draw a free-form shape around the object(s) you wish to select.
  3. Release the mouse button to complete the selection.
    • Useful Tip: Just like with the Rectangle tool, you can hold the Alt key while drawing to select any object the lasso shape partially covers.

2. Modifying Selections with Keyboard Keys

You can use keyboard keys in combination with the selection tools to add or remove objects from your current selection.

  • To Deselect Everything: Simply click on an empty space on the design canvas.
  • To Add to a Selection: Hold down the Ctrl key or the Shift key while clicking on additional objects.
    • Shift Key: This key only adds to the current selection. Clicking on an already selected object while holding Shift will do nothing.
    • Ctrl Key: This key toggles the selection. Clicking on an unselected object will add it to the selection. Clicking on an already selected object will deselect it. This is the best method for removing specific items from a larger group selection.

3. Context Menu and Hotkey Selections

For quick, design-wide actions, you can use the right-click context menu or keyboard hotkeys.

  1. Right-click on an empty area of the design canvas to bring up the context menu.
  2. Choose from the following options:
    • Select All: Selects every object in your design.
      • Hotkey: Ctrl + A
    • Select None (Deselect): Clears the current selection.
    • Invert Selection: Deselects all currently selected objects and selects all the objects that were previously unselected.
      • Hotkey: Ctrl + Shift + I

4. Selecting via the Sequence Manager

The Sequence Manager provides a list-based view of all the objects in your design, allowing for precise selection.

  • Select a Single Object: Click on any object’s icon in the Sequence Manager list to select it on the canvas.
  • Select Multiple, Non-Consecutive Objects: Hold down the Ctrl key and click on each object icon you wish to select.
  • Select a Continuous Range of Objects:
    1. Click on the first object icon in the desired range.
    2. Hold down the Shift key.
    3. Click on the last object icon in the range.
    4. All objects between the first and last click will be selected.

5. Navigating Selections with the Tab Key

You can cycle through the objects in your design one by one using the Tab key.

  • Move Forward: Press the Tab key to select the next object in the sewing sequence. If nothing is selected, it will start with the first object.
  • Move Backward: Press Shift + Tab to select the previous object in the sewing sequence. If nothing is selected, it will start with the last object and move in reverse order.

6. Other Selection Methods

eXPerience 8 also offers advanced, property-based selection tools which are covered in detail in separate tutorials:

  • Select by Color: Allows you to select all objects that share the same thread color.
  • Select by Stitch Type: Allows you to select all objects that use the same stitch type (e.g., all Satin stitches).

Becoming familiar with these user-friendly selection tools will help you navigate and edit your designs with greater speed and ease!
