Mastering Node Editing: Understanding Node Types and Path Manipulation – Level Operator

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In eXPerience 8, every design you create is essentially artwork composed of lines and curves. The Edit Nodes mode is a powerful tool that allows you to reshape, fine-tune, and perfect these curves after they have been drawn.

Step 1: Entering “Edit Nodes” Mode

There are two quick ways to begin editing the structure of your design:

  • The Toolbar: Click the Edit Nodes icon located on the Tools bar on the left side of the application window.
  • Keyboard Shortcut: Simply press the N key on your keyboard.

Once active, the outlines of your selected object will be highlighted, revealing the nodes (dots) and segments (the lines between dots).

Step 2: Basic Node Manipulation

To change the shape of your artwork, you can interact directly with the outline:

  1. Select an Object: Click on any object to display its specific nodes.
  2. Move a Node: Click and drag any round or square dot to move the connecting point.
  3. Reshape a Segment: Place your cursor directly on a line (segment) between two nodes, then click and drag to adjust the curve.
  4. Selecting Nodes: Click a single node to select it, or click and drag a rectangle around multiple nodes to select a group.

Step 3: Understanding Node Types

The software uses three distinct types of nodes to control how curves behave. Each is color-coded and shaped differently for easy identification:

Node TypeIcon AppearanceBehaviorBest Used For…
Auto SmoothRound / Dark BlueAutomatically adjusted by the software; no manual control handles.Quick, fluid shapes where the software manages the “flow.”
SmoothRound / GreenFeatures two control handles that stay directly opposite each other.Creating continuous, elegant curves with balanced transitions.
CuspSquare / RedAllows handles to move independently or creates sharp corners.Sharp angles, points, or precise adjustments to one side of a curve.

Step 4: Changing Node Types

You are never stuck with the default node type. To convert a node:

  1. Right-click on the specific node you wish to change.
  2. Select the desired type (Auto Smooth, Smooth, or Cusp) from the context menu.
  3. The icon color and shape will update immediately, granting you the specific control handles for that type.

Useful Tips for Better Design

  • The Power of Cusp Nodes: If you need to edit one side of a shape without moving the other, convert the node to a Cusp. This prevents “pulling” the rest of the design out of alignment.
  • Manual Handle Control: For Smooth and Cusp nodes, click and drag the “arrow” handles that appear when the node is selected. This provides much more precision than dragging the segment itself.
  • Keyboard Efficiency: Get used to using the N key. It allows you to jump between drawing tools and editing mode instantly, significantly speeding up your digitizing workflow.
